Gamal? Who’s that?

Gamal ElSawah is a queer Arab-American writer, actor, and comedian, born and based in New York City.

He is a graduate of Hunter College where he studied Theatre and Vocal Performance. He made his Broadway debut in 2016 with the Hunter Opera Theater in Kristin Chenoweth's My Love Letter to Broadway. Other past performance credits include Fireworks: An American Opera Buffa, Clybourne Park, Could Have Been: A New Musical, Ladybird: First Lady of the Land, Blood Wedding, Waiting for Lefty, Clickbait, and No Exit.

In 2020, he co-created and starred in the sci-fi comedy web series, Wormholes, which ran for a total of 21 episodes across two seasons from 2020-2022.

As a writer, his stories are characterized by their high emotions, bold protests, in-your-face comedy, and off-kilter worlds – a mishmash of real-life messiness and the extraordinary and otherworldly.

Gamal’s plays have been workshopped and presented in New York by Noor Theater, Fail Better NYC, The Bechdel Group, The Fresh Fruit Festival, Make/Shift, and Showdogs Theater Collective. He has written for the sketch comedy podcast show Only Sketches About…, as well as the sci-fi comedy web series, Wormholes.

His Short Play, Do You Speak My Language?, was awarded the Fresh Fruit Festival’s 2019 Award for Best Short Play, and his web series, Wormholes, received the 2022 Award for Best Web Series, as well as the 2021 Audience Award at the Astoria Film Festival.

He is a current member of the SWANA Writer's Co-op at Playwrights Horizons, as well as of Northern Sky Theater’s NOVA Circle for BIPOC Writers, the Dramatists Guild, and Actor’s Equity Association.
